The
Municipal Center for History possesses today a rich archive
that consists of the Volos Municipality archive (1883-1982),
46 private archives concerning directly or indirectly the
city and its greater area, archives of old industrial enterprises,
as well as important material of building plans, maps, aerial
photos, transparencies and photos.
The
library of Volos's Municipal Center for History and Documentation
started operating in 1992, its aim being the collection,
administration, utilization and promotion of any kind or
form of printed documents.
A special on such an everyday, multi-aspect and subjective
topic, as entertainment can be, is always a challenge. On
this matter tries to rise to the occasion the 17th "En
Volo" issue, through the utilization of the immediacy
and charm that personal accounts can provide.
The special is divided into three entities: the first deals
with the period from the end of the 19th century to the
2nd world war, the second picks up there and leaves off
in the mid 1960s -era of the city's reconstruction after
the major earthquakes that struck the area-, while the last
addresses the period beginning with the Dictatorship and
goes on to the present.
Fellow citizens of various ages write on the celebrations
and various entertainment outlets of the different eras,
as these are drawn from their personal experiences and memories.
These accounts are accompanied by interviews from people
to whom we were lead by our research. Respectively, for
each of the thematic entities, the political, economic and
social conditions are presented, as well as their impact
on the various entertainment forms of the city.
In our first pages, in the "Memento" column, we
present images from the Volos Carnival of 1961. The "Personalities"
column, as tribute, presents the Milanos family and their
invaluable contribution to the city's music. The "Literature"
column features a text by Thomas Skassis on the author Claude
Simon and his works. The issue is completed by the -irrespective
of the special- columns, "Euretirio -Index-" of
articles for the issues 12 to 15 (2004) of "En Volo",
and with the "Agenda" column, which records the
social activity of our town in the first six months of 2005.
