The
Municipal Center for History possesses today a rich archive
that consists of the Volos Municipality archive (1883-1982),
46 private archives concerning directly or indirectly the
city and its greater area, archives of old industrial enterprises,
as well as important material of building plans, maps, aerial
photos, transparencies and photos.
The
library of Volos's Municipal Center for History and Documentation
started operating in 1992, its aim being the collection,
administration, utilization and promotion of any kind or
form of printed documents.
this is the second issue of ev Volo,
in Volos, and, as we already promised, it is devoted to
the theatrical life of Volos, through the 120 years the
city betongs to the Greek country. Given the limitations
of the magazine, this topic that cannot be completed; so,
instead of this, we aimed in publicizing a body of information,
hoping to encourage further research.
Approaching theatre in Volos through the time was another
aim; so theatre is presented here not only in its historic
aspects, but also in its present state, as it shows a continuously
rising course, in terms of the cultural intervention of
the municipality, but also of the independent artistic creativity.
Theatre in Volos. From the first, ardent ventures of a city
with galloping development (1881 - 1930), seeking its place
in the contemporary world; till the economic, and the following
cultural, impoverishment (1936 - 1974), crowned by the dictatorship
of 1967; and till the rebirth effected by the tireless efforts
of few decisive persons, later also with the help of the
state, from 1975 till today.
Some things change through these years, some others not,
aesthetic tendencies, social structures, attitudes once
cute and once shameful, geographic and cultural particularities
inside a world that sonorously changed, all over this century.
Pursuing identity, ventures for communication, cultural
imports and exports, modernization, vanguard, popularity,
all together.
This issue comes together with a compact disk with an anthology
of sound documents -music and speech- of the theatrical
activity of the city of Volos in the last decade. Furthermore,
it contains some glances on the relations of theatre with
the other arts, even "out of the walls" of the
city, and some other on the cultural life of the whole region
of Magnesia.
