The
Municipal Center for History possesses today a rich archive
that consists of the Volos Municipality archive (1883-1982),
46 private archives concerning directly or indirectly the
city and its greater area, archives of old industrial enterprises,
as well as important material of building plans, maps, aerial
photos, transparencies and photos.
The
library of Volos's Municipal Center for History and Documentation
started operating in 1992, its aim being the collection,
administration, utilization and promotion of any kind or
form of printed documents.
When addressing the tradition of photographers in Magnesia,
most people immediately recall, and not accidentally so,
the figures of Stefanos Stournaras, Kostas Zimeris, Dimitris
Letsios, and from the more recent personalities in the field,
that of Michalis Pornalis. The tradition of the area in
photography, however, cannot be exhausted as a topic only
by merely mentioning these most important, of great achievement,
and country-wide fame personalities.
The first photographic accounts of the area derive from
photographers escorting travelers and date from the middle
of the 19th century, only a few years after the invention
of photography, while in 1865 the first photographic studio
was founded in Volos. From that time on, and until our days,
Volos and its environs have produced an important number
of photographers, who in turn promoted the area throughout
the country, especially through the postcards they issued.
That the history of the area in photography is at the same
time rich and unknown to the public goes without saying,
and that was the reason for the tribute of the 5th en Volo
issue. The above effort was greatly supported by the collection
of Stavros Mpatoudakis, on which, as well as on his personal
research, a substantial part of the tribute is based. Also,
the tribute includes documents regarding the first photographers
in Thessaly, photographic groups, photography in archaeology,
the contribution of Kitsos Makris as photographer, and portraits
of important photographers of the previous century.
Also included in this issue are the usual columns addressing
the arts -literature and cinema-, important personalities
-Achilleas Adamantiadis and Basilis Mitsakis-, suggestions,
-music and cinema-, and the calendar of events -events carried
out in the past three months or scheduled for the next trimester-.
