In
the context of the electronic processing of the archive
collections and the index compilation, the Municipal Centre
for Historcal Research and Documentation, in cooperation
with the
National Documentation Centre, proceeded with
the electronic publication of the search tools for the
archives collection.
Specifically, through the standard application of of XML
schema document management developed by The National Documentation
Center, the standard
Encoded
Archival Description (EAD) Version 2002 was realized
for the production of electronically published search
tools.
The general philosophy of ISAD (G), as translated by the
Hellenic Documentation Association, is followed for the
description of archive collections and the creation of
search tools.Simultaneously, offered is the capability
of automation of the production process of unified search
tool indexes per selected access point, such as Personal
Names, Corperation Names, Subject Headings and Corporation
Names as Origination.
The archive description follows the multilevel description
beginning from the generic (archive level) and reaching
the specific (document level).

The
Municipal Center for History possesses today a rich archive
that consists of the Volos Municipality archive (1883-1982),
46 private archives concerning directly or indirectly the
city and its greater area, archives of old industrial enterprises,
as well as important material of building plans, maps, aerial
photos, transparencies and photos.
The
library of Volos's Municipal Center for History and Documentation
started operating in 1992, its aim being the collection,
administration, utilization and promotion of any kind or
form of printed documents.
